Who Can Become a Trainer and Assessor? Entry Requirements Explained

You do not need to start from scratch — industry experience and existing qualifications both count.

There is no single type of person who becomes a trainer and assessor. The profession draws people from almost every industry — tradespeople, hospitality professionals, healthcare workers, teachers, corporate trainers, and more. What they share is a depth of knowledge in their field and a desire to pass it on.

To enrol in TAE40122, most RTOs require that you hold, or are working toward, a qualification at the same level or higher than the training you intend to deliver. This means:

  • If you want to train Certificate III students, you typically need a Certificate III or higher in the relevant vocational area

  • If you are training at diploma level, you would generally need a diploma or equivalent

This requirement exists because trainers are expected to have genuine vocational competency — real-world skill and knowledge in the area they are teaching. A qualification helps demonstrate that, but so does documented industry experience.

For people with significant industry experience who may not hold formal qualifications, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be an option. RPL allows your existing skills, knowledge and experience to be assessed against the TAE40122 units, with credit granted for what you can already demonstrate.

There is no age requirement to enrol in TAE40122, and the qualification is open to people at any stage of their career. Many people complete it while continuing to work in their industry, using their current role as the practical context for their assessments.

Blueprint Career Development assesses each prospective student individually to determine the most appropriate pathway — whether that is standard enrolment, RPL, or a combination of both. Contact us for a no-obligation conversation about your eligibility.
