The National Qualification Requirement for Trainers and Assessors in Australia
TAE40122 is not optional — here is what the Standards for RTOs actually require.
One of the most common questions people ask when considering a move into training is: do I actually need a formal qualification? The answer, for anyone working within the Australian VET system, is yes.
The Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015 set out the requirements that all RTOs and their trainers must meet. Under these standards, trainers and assessors are required to hold:
-
TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or the superseded TAE40116, subject to upgrade requirements), or
-
A diploma or higher-level qualification in adult education
In addition to the formal qualification, trainers must have current skills and knowledge in the vocational area they are delivering in — this is referred to as vocational competency and vocational currency. Holding TAE40122 alone is not sufficient if a trainer cannot also demonstrate current industry knowledge.
The TAE40122 is the most common pathway for people entering the training profession. It covers the skills needed to design learning programs, deliver training in a structured way, and conduct formal competency assessments — all within the framework that Australian RTOs operate under.
Trainers who currently hold the earlier TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment are required to upgrade to TAE40122. The upgrade pathway involves completing specific transition units rather than repeating the full qualification.
Blueprint Career Development delivers TAE40122 and upgrade pathways for trainers at all stages — from people who are completely new to training through to experienced trainers who need to formalise or upgrade their credentials. Contact us to talk through which pathway applies to your situation.
