Becoming a Trainer in a School Setting — What Teachers Need to Know

Delivering VET in a secondary school comes with specific requirements that go beyond a standard teaching registration.

For teachers working in secondary schools, VET delivery sits at the intersection of two regulatory frameworks — the school system and the national VET system. Meeting the requirements of both is essential, and many teachers discover that their teaching registration alone does not satisfy the VET sector's trainer qualification requirements.

Under the Standards for RTOs, trainers who deliver nationally recognised qualifications — including VET in Schools (VETiS) programs — are required to hold TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, or an approved equivalent. A teaching degree or registration does not substitute for this requirement.

In Queensland, the VET Delivered to School Students Teacher Enhancement Skill Set (TAESS00024) is a specific credential designed for teachers who are new to VET delivery. It provides an introduction to the VET system, training package interpretation, and assessment in a school context. Some schools use this as an entry point for teachers before they complete the full TAE40122.

Key questions for teachers considering VET delivery:

  • Does your school's RTO partner require TAE40122, or will the Teacher Enhancement Skill Set be sufficient for your role?
  • Are you delivering and assessing, or only delivering? Assessment responsibilities typically require the full TAE40122.
  • Do you hold a qualification at the same level as — or higher than — the VET subjects you will be delivering?
