Step 7: Check the RTO's Compliance Track Record (and Red Flags to Watch For)
An RTO's compliance history is public record — checking it takes five minutes and can save your school from a damaging partnership.
An RTO's compliance history is a matter of public record. ASQA publishes information about regulatory action taken against RTOs, including compliance notices, conditions of registration, and cancellations. Checking this history takes five minutes and can save a school from a damaging partnership.
In addition to the ASQA public register, schools can ask an RTO directly:
- Has the RTO been subject to any ASQA audits in the last three years, and what were the findings?
- Does the RTO hold any conditions on its ASQA registration?
- Has the RTO ever had a qualification cancelled or suspended by ASQA?
A reputable RTO will answer these questions openly and provide documentary evidence if requested.
Red Flags to Watch For
Be cautious of any RTO that: cannot confirm current ASQA registration, is vague about what compliance management it provides, cannot provide school references, offers prices significantly below market rate (this may indicate cost-cutting on compliance), pressures schools to sign quickly, or cannot clearly explain the assessment process for students.
