Common Questions About the TAE40116 to TAE40122 Upgrade, Answered

Straight answers to the questions trainers ask most often about the upgrade process.

The TAE40116 to TAE40122 upgrade generates a consistent set of questions from trainers who are working through their obligations. Here are clear answers to the ones Blueprint Career Development hears most often.

Is the upgrade mandatory?

Yes, for trainers working within RTOs. The Standards for RTOs require trainers and assessors to hold TAE40122 (or an approved equivalent), which means TAE40116 alone is no longer sufficient. The upgrade is a compliance requirement, not an optional improvement.

My RTO hasn't mentioned the upgrade — does that mean I don't need to do it?

No. The obligation exists regardless of whether your RTO has raised it with you. Some RTOs have been slow to audit their trainer qualifications and initiate upgrade conversations. If you hold TAE40116 and are working as a trainer, it is worth confirming your status with your compliance manager.

I completed TAE40116 years ago — does it still count toward the upgrade?

Yes. The upgrade pathway is designed for holders of TAE40116 regardless of when they completed it. Your existing TAE40116 units are recognised, and you complete only the transition units required to bring the qualification to TAE40122 standard.

Can I upgrade through RPL?

Possibly, for some or all of the transition units. RPL depends on whether you can demonstrate competency in the units being upgraded through evidence of your existing practice. Blueprint Career Development assesses RPL eligibility individually and will give you an honest view of whether it is a viable pathway for your situation.

What if I hold both TAE40116 and some TAE40122 units — do I still need to upgrade?

It depends on which TAE40122 units you hold and whether they satisfy the current packaging rules for the full qualification. Blueprint Career Development can review your qualification record and confirm your status. Do not assume partial units are sufficient without checking.

What if I hold a Diploma in Training Design and Development or higher? Do I still need TAE40122?

A Diploma or higher-level qualification in adult education is an approved alternative to TAE40122 under the Standards for RTOs. If you hold a current Diploma, contact your RTO compliance team to confirm whether your qualification satisfies the requirement.
