What Is the Difference Between TAE40116 and TAE40122?
A clear, practical comparison of the two qualifications — what changed and why it matters.
TAE40116 and TAE40122 are both Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualifications, but they reflect different points in time in the development of VET sector expectations. Understanding what changed helps you make sense of the upgrade requirement and what the transition units are designed to address.
Why was the qualification updated?
The update from TAE40116 to TAE40122 was driven by a review of the TAE Training and Education Training Package that identified areas where the qualification needed to be strengthened to better reflect contemporary practice. The review found that some units needed to be updated to address changes in technology, assessment practice, and the integration of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) support.
Key changes in TAE40122
- The TAELLN411 unit from TAE40116 (Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills) has been replaced by TAELLN521, which has a broader and more contemporary focus on supporting LLN development in training contexts
- Assessment design units have been updated to reflect stronger expectations around the principles of assessment and the rules of evidence
- A unit addressing e-learning facilitation has been included, reflecting the growth of technology-enhanced delivery in VET
- Unit coding has been updated across the qualification
What stayed the same?
The core purpose of the qualification is unchanged. TAE40122 still develops the same foundational trainer and assessor competencies — designing learning programs, delivering training, designing and using assessment tools, and assessing competency. The update refined and strengthened how these are addressed, rather than replacing them entirely.
Does the difference affect how you practise?
For most experienced trainers, the transition units in the upgrade pathway formalise practices that good trainers are already applying. The LLN and e-learning updates in particular reflect what many trainers are already doing in their day-to-day delivery. The upgrade is less about learning something entirely new and more about aligning your formal credential to current expectations.
