Do You Need to Upgrade from TAE40116 to TAE40122? What Trainers Need to Know

If you hold TAE40116, your qualification status under the current Standards for RTOs is important to understand.

If you completed your Certificate IV in Training and Assessment under the TAE40116 version of the qualification, you are not alone in wondering whether you need to do anything further. The short answer is yes — TAE40116 is no longer considered current under the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015, and trainers working within RTOs are required to hold TAE40122 or an approved equivalent.

What the Standards for RTOs actually say

The Standards for RTOs require that trainers and assessors hold the current version of the TAE qualification, or a diploma or higher-level qualification in adult education. TAE40116 is the superseded version of the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Where trainers hold TAE40116, RTOs are required to ensure they upgrade to TAE40122.

What if you are not currently working in an RTO?

If you hold TAE40116 but are not currently employed in a formal training role, the compliance obligation sits with any RTO you work for, not with you individually as a credential holder. However, if you are working as a contractor, seeking employment as a trainer, or planning to return to training delivery, holding the current qualification removes any uncertainty about your status and makes you more competitive in the job market.

What if your RTO has not raised this with you?

Some RTOs have been slow to audit their trainer qualifications and initiate upgrade conversations. This does not mean the obligation does not exist — it means the RTO has not yet acted on it. If you are unsure of your status, it is worth raising it with your RTO manager or compliance team directly.

How does the upgrade work?

The TAE40116 to TAE40122 upgrade does not require you to repeat the full qualification. There is a defined upgrade pathway involving the completion of specific transition units that address the changes between the two versions. Blueprint Career Development delivers this upgrade pathway and can confirm exactly what is required based on your current TAE40116 record.

Contact Blueprint Career Development to confirm your upgrade requirements and discuss the pathway that applies to you.
