Upgrading Your Trainer Workforce — A Guide for RTO Compliance Managers
Managing a TAE40116 to TAE40122 upgrade across a team requires a clear process — here is how to approach it.
For RTO compliance managers, the TAE40116 to TAE40122 upgrade is a workforce management task as much as an individual learning challenge. Getting all affected trainers through the upgrade in an organised, documented way — without disrupting delivery — requires a clear process.
Step 1 — Audit your trainer records
Start with a complete audit of all trainers' qualification records. Identify who holds TAE40116 and who already holds TAE40122. For each TAE40116 holder, note the specific units completed, as this will determine the exact upgrade requirements for each person.
Step 2 — Determine individual upgrade requirements
The upgrade pathway is not identical for every TAE40116 holder. The specific transition units required depend on the electives each person completed in their original qualification. Blueprint Career Development can assist with this review — if you share your trainers' qualifications, we can confirm the specific requirements for each person.
Step 3 — Identify RPL candidates
For trainers who are actively applying the skills in the transition units, RPL may be a faster and more efficient pathway. Reviewing each trainer's current practice and documentation before the upgrade commences allows you to structure the programme most efficiently.
Step 4 — Establish a timeline
Set a realistic target completion date for your upgrade programme. Consider delivery schedules, assessment submission timelines and any upcoming audit periods. Having a documented plan — with individual trainer names, start dates and target completion dates — is important evidence of proactive management if the upgrade status is raised in an audit.
Step 5 — Confirm completion and update records
When each trainer completes their upgrade, ensure their qualification records are updated and the Statement of Attainment is filed. Confirm with your RTO's systems team that the updated qualification is reflected in trainer files and any relevant compliance registers.
