Can I Complete TAE40122 Through RPL? How Recognition of Prior Learning Works

If you have been training people for years, you may not need to start from scratch.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that allows your existing skills, knowledge and experience to be assessed against the requirements of TAE40122. Where you can demonstrate competency in a unit through evidence of what you already know and do, you may be granted credit for that unit without completing new learning.

RPL is not a reduced-quality pathway. The evidence standard is the same as for students who complete the full programme. What RPL changes is the starting point — instead of working through learning content on skills you already have, you gather and present evidence of existing competency.

Who is RPL suited to?

  • Workplace trainers who have been delivering training informally or without a formal TAE qualification
  • Experienced trainers and assessors who held earlier qualifications such as the Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training (TWA)
  • Teachers who have delivered vocational programs and conducted competency assessments in a school setting
  • Instructional designers, training coordinators and people who have designed learning programs and assessment tools professionally

What evidence is typically required for TAE40122 RPL?

  • Session plans, training programs or learning resources you have designed
  • Assessment tools — observation checklists, written assessments, portfolios — you have developed or used
  • Records of training delivery, such as attendance records, facilitator guides or delivery logs
  • Third-party statements or references from employers, managers or learners who can verify your practice
  • Your own written account of how you apply training and assessment skills in your current or recent role

How much credit can RPL provide?

The amount of credit granted depends entirely on what you can demonstrate. Some applicants complete TAE40122 almost entirely through RPL; others complete RPL for some units and undertake learning for the remainder. Blueprint Career Development assesses each RPL application individually and will be clear about what evidence is sufficient and where gaps exist.
