TAE40122 vs TAE40116 — What Is the Difference and Which Do You Need?

Understanding the transition from TAE40116 to TAE40122 — and why the upgrade matters.

TAE40116 and TAE40122 are both Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualifications, but they are not interchangeable. TAE40122 is the current version of the qualification, and it reflects updated requirements in the VET sector — particularly around assessment practice and the integration of digital and language, literacy and numeracy considerations.

What changed from TAE40116 to TAE40122?

The TAE40122 introduced revised and new units that reflect contemporary expectations in VET delivery. Key changes include:

  • A stronger emphasis on assessment design and the principles of assessment
  • Updated units that address digital and technology-enhanced learning contexts
  • Revised language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) requirements — the TAELLN411 unit from TAE40116 has been superseded
  • Updated unit coding and packaging rules

Do you need to upgrade?

If you currently hold TAE40116 and are working as a trainer or assessor within an RTO, your RTO is responsible for ensuring you meet the current qualification requirements. The Standards for RTOs require trainers to hold TAE40122 (or an approved equivalent), which means TAE40116 alone is no longer sufficient.

If you hold TAE40116 and are not currently working in a formal training role, upgrading still positions you correctly for future employment and removes any uncertainty about your compliance status.

Which do you need?

If you do not yet hold any TAE qualification, you should enrol in TAE40122 — the current qualification — rather than TAE40116, which is no longer offered as a new enrolment by most RTOs.

If you hold TAE40116, you need to complete the TAE40116 to TAE40122 upgrade pathway rather than re-enrol in the full qualification.
