Why Teacher Qualifications Matter in VETiS Delivery

Training and assessment must be delivered by appropriately qualified staff — getting this wrong creates real compliance risk.

One of the most frequently asked questions from school leadership teams considering a VETiS program is: do our teachers need a special qualification to deliver it?

The short answer is yes — and understanding which qualification is required, and how teachers can obtain it, is essential for any school planning a VETiS program. Getting this wrong can expose a school to compliance risk and may affect the validity of student qualifications.

Under the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015, training and assessment must be delivered by individuals with the appropriate vocational competency and training and assessment skills. For teachers facilitating VETiS programs within a Third Party Agreement, this typically means holding a relevant training and assessment qualification.

When a school partners with an RTO under a Third Party Agreement, the school's staff facilitate the learning — but the RTO is responsible for ensuring the training is delivered to the required standard. An RTO that allows unqualified facilitators to deliver training risks its ASQA registration and the validity of qualifications issued to students.

For school Principals and Heads of Department, understanding these requirements is not just about compliance — it is about protecting students. Students who complete a program delivered by an unqualified facilitator may find their qualifications challenged by ASQA or future employers.
