What Does Trainer Currency Actually Mean — and How Do You Demonstrate It?

Currency is one of the most misunderstood concepts in VET compliance — here is a clear explanation.

Currency is one of the terms that appears frequently in VET sector compliance conversations but is not always well understood in practice. Trainers are required to be current — but what that actually means, and what evidence satisfies the requirement, varies more than many people realise.

The two dimensions of currency

The Standards for RTOs require trainers and assessors to maintain currency in two distinct areas:

  • Vocational competency and currency — current knowledge and skills in the vocational area they are delivering
  • Training and assessment currency — current skills and knowledge in training and assessment practice

These are separate requirements, and evidence for one does not satisfy the other. A trainer who is deeply current in their industry area but has not engaged in any professional development in training and assessment practice is not meeting the full currency requirement.

Vocational currency — what it looks like in practice

Vocational currency means staying up to date with developments in the industry area you train in. This is not about holding an entry-level qualification — it is about demonstrating that your knowledge of the industry reflects current practice, not where the industry was five or ten years ago.

Evidence of vocational currency can include:

  • Continuing to work in the industry alongside your training role
  • Participation in industry events, conferences or trade activities
  • Memberships in relevant industry associations
  • Completion of short courses, micro-credentials or other professional learning in the vocational area
  • Engagement with industry publications, updates to standards or technical specifications

Training and assessment currency — what it looks like in practice

Training and assessment currency means staying current in your practice as an educator and assessor. Evidence can include:

  • Participation in professional development focused on training design, delivery or assessment
  • Engagement with VET sector publications, regulatory updates or sector research
  • Participation in assessment validation activities
  • Completion of formal qualifications or units in the TAE Training Package
