Assessment Validation — What It Is, Why It Matters and How to Do It Well

Validation is a mandatory quality assurance activity — and one of the areas ASQA scrutinises most closely.

Assessment validation is one of the activities most commonly referenced in ASQA audit findings — both because it is mandatory and because it is frequently done poorly. Understanding what validation actually involves, and what makes it meaningful rather than procedural, is important for every trainer and RTO.

What is assessment validation?

Assessment validation is a quality assurance process in which qualified trainers review assessment tools and assessment decisions to check that they are valid, reliable, flexible and fair. It is distinct from moderation — moderation checks that consistent judgements are being made about individual learners; validation checks that the assessment system itself is fit for purpose.

What the Standards require

Standard 1 of the Standards for RTOs requires that RTOs conduct systematic validation of assessment practices and judgements. This must involve:

  • Validators who are qualified to assess in the relevant training product
  • A systematic approach — not ad hoc or reactive, but planned and documented
  • Review of assessment tools, assessment judgements and assessment outcomes
  • Outcomes that are used to inform improvements to assessment practice

What makes validation genuinely useful

Effective validation is not a box-ticking exercise. It is a professional conversation among qualified trainers about whether the assessment tools and processes are working as they should. The markers of effective validation include:

  • Validators who have current vocational competency in the area being validated — not just general training expertise
  • Structured review against the principles of assessment and the rules of evidence
  • Honest identification of gaps or inconsistencies in assessment tools or judgements
  • Clear, documented outcomes and improvement actions
  • Evidence that improvement actions have been implemented

Participating in validation as a trainer

As a trainer, participating in validation activities is both a compliance obligation and a professional development opportunity. Engaging seriously with the process — rather than treating it as paperwork — builds your assessment practice over time.

Blueprint Career Development supports RTOs with assessment validation facilitation and can provide qualified external validators. Contact us to discuss your validation programme.
