How to Build a Trainer Professional Development Plan That Satisfies Your RTO and ASQA

A practical framework for building a PD plan that is both genuinely useful and audit-ready

A trainer professional development plan does not need to be complex, but it does need to be genuine. A plan that lists activities without connecting them to the trainer's actual practice — or that records PD that was never used to improve anything — is unlikely to satisfy ASQA scrutiny and is unlikely to support the trainer's development in any meaningful way.

Here is a practical framework for building a PD plan that works on both counts.

Part 1 — Self-assessment

Start by identifying where your currency genuinely needs attention. Ask yourself:

  • In my vocational area, what has changed in the past twelve months that I am not yet across?
  • In my training and assessment practice, what do I find challenging or where do I know I could improve?
  • Are there upcoming changes to the training packages I deliver that I need to understand?
  • Have there been any findings from validation activities that relate to my assessment practice?

Part 2 — Activity selection

Select professional development activities that directly address the gaps identified in your self-assessment. Activities can include:

  • Formal qualifications or units in the TAE Training Package
  • Industry-specific short courses, workshops or conferences
  • Webinars, online learning or sector publications
  • Participation in assessment validation panels
  • Mentoring or peer observation
  • Industry site visits or work placement

The key is that the activity connects to your identified need and that you can articulate what you learned and how you applied it.

Part 3 — Recording

For each PD activity, record:

  • The activity name, provider and date
  • The duration or volume of the activity
  • How it relates to your current training or assessment practice
  • What you learned or what changed in your practice as a result

Part 4 — Annual review

Review your PD plan at least annually. Update it to reflect your current training context, any new qualifications you have undertaken, and any changes to the training packages or regulatory environment that affect your delivery.
