What ASQA Looks for When Auditing Trainer Qualifications and Currency

Understanding what ASQA's auditors actually look for helps RTOs and trainers stay ahead of compliance issues.

ASQA audits of trainer qualifications and currency are among the most common sources of non-compliance findings for RTOs. Understanding what auditors look for — and what constitutes adequate evidence — helps RTOs and their trainers prepare effectively and avoid findings that could have been prevented.

The qualification check

Auditors will review the qualification records of all trainers involved in delivering and assessing the training products on the RTO's scope. They will check:

  • That each trainer holds TAE40122 (or the superseded TAE40116, where an upgrade pathway is in place and documented), or an approved equivalent
  • That the TAE qualification is genuine — issued by an RTO that was registered at the time, with a valid Statement of Attainment or qualification certificate
  • That trainers assessing at a particular AQF level hold a qualification at the same level or higher in the relevant vocational area

The vocational competency check

Auditors will look for evidence that each trainer has current skills and knowledge in the vocational area they are delivering. This is assessed through:

  • Vocational qualifications held — checked against the level and content of the qualifications being delivered
  • Evidence of vocational currency — professional development records, industry engagement, employment history
  • The trainer's own account of their current industry knowledge and practice, sometimes assessed through interview

The professional development check

Auditors will look for evidence that the RTO has a systematic approach to trainer professional development and that trainers are actively maintaining their currency. They look for:

  • A professional development plan or register that is current and specific to each trainer
  • Evidence that PD activities have been completed — certificates, records, reflective notes
  • Evidence that validation activities have been conducted and documented
  • Evidence that PD outcomes have been applied to practice — not just recorded

Common findings related to trainer qualifications and currency

  • Trainers holding TAE40116 without an upgrade pathway in place
  • Professional development records that list activities but do not connect them to the trainer's practice
  • Vocational currency records that are incomplete or based on outdated industry engagement
  • Validation records that demonstrate a procedural approach rather than genuine quality assurance
