Certificate II vs Certificate III: Choosing the Right Level

The right level depends on a student's goals, the time available in their senior schooling, and their industry of interest.

One of the most common questions from students, parents, and VET Coordinators is whether to choose a Certificate II or Certificate III qualification. The answer depends on the student's goals, the time available in their senior schooling, and the specific industry they are interested in.

When Certificate II is the Right Choice

  • The student is in Year 10 or early Year 11 with limited timetable space
  • The student wants an introduction to an industry area before committing to a higher level
  • The student's primary goal is to build skills and contribute towards their QCE with a manageable workload
  • The qualification will be used as a stepping stone to an apprenticeship or traineeship
  • The student wants entry-level employment skills in a specific industry

When Certificate III is the Right Choice

            • The student has two years available in Years 11 and 12 for a VETiS program
            • The student has a clear career goal in the industry and wants a higher-level qualification
            • The school has resource and timetable capacity for a more intensive program
            • The student wants their VETiS qualification to make a stronger contribution to their senior schooling plan
            • The student wants a qualification that supports direct employment in a skilled role
