How to Support Your Teaching Staff to Meet VETiS Trainer Requirements

A practical guide for VET Coordinators and school leaders managing teacher qualification compliance.

Managing the qualification requirements of teaching staff involved in VETiS delivery is one of the practical challenges that lands on the desk of Queensland VET Coordinators. The regulatory framework is clear — but translating it into an action plan for a busy school requires a structured approach.

Step 1 — Map who is involved in VETiS delivery

Start by identifying every teacher who has a role in your VETiS program — not just those delivering content, but those who are marking assessments, signing off on competency, or supporting delivery in any formal capacity. The qualification requirement applies to anyone in a training or assessment role under the RTO's registration, not just lead teachers.

Step 2 — Review current qualifications

For each teacher identified, confirm what TAE credentials they currently hold:

  • TAE40122 — current and compliant
  • TAE40116 — needs upgrade to TAE40122
  • TAESS00024 — may be sufficient for a support role; confirm with your RTO partner
  • No TAE credential — needs TAE40122 or TAESS00024 depending on their role

Step 3 — Prioritise by role

Not all teachers in a VETiS program have the same qualification requirement. Teachers conducting formal competency assessments have the highest requirement — TAE40122. Teachers in a delivery support role may have more flexibility. Prioritise the TAE40122 pathway for assessors first.

Step 4 — Plan the development pathway

Work with your RTO partner to establish a practical development pathway for each teacher. Consider:

  • Whether teachers with significant prior training experience might be eligible for RPL
  • Whether the TAESS00024 skill set can serve as a bridge credential while TAE40122 is completed
  • Whether a group delivery arrangement can be structured around school terms

Step 5 — Document and track

Maintain a qualification register for all teaching staff involved in VETiS delivery. Document current credentials, commencement dates for any qualifications in progress, and target completion dates. This documentation is important evidence of proactive compliance management.
