VET Coordinator Guide: Managing Teacher Qualifications and Compliance
A practical reference for VET Coordinators responsible for trainer compliance in a school VETiS program.
The VET Coordinator role in a Queensland secondary school covers a wide range of responsibilities, and managing the qualification compliance of teaching staff involved in VETiS delivery is one of the less visible but most important of them. Here is a practical reference for staying on top of it.
Understanding the compliance framework
VETiS delivery is regulated under the Standards for RTOs 2015, regardless of whether the school is itself an RTO or is partnered with one. Standard 1 of the Standards for RTOs specifically addresses trainer and assessor requirements. Under Standard 1, trainers must hold:
- TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or the superseded TAE40116, subject to upgrade requirements), or
- A diploma or higher-level qualification in adult education, or
- In some limited contexts, an approved alternative credential such as the TAESS00024 skill set
What records should you maintain?
For every teacher involved in VETiS delivery, maintain a file that includes:
- Current TAE qualification certificate or Statement of Attainment
- Vocational qualifications relevant to the VETiS subjects they deliver
- Evidence of current industry engagement or vocational currency
- Professional development records for the current year
These records mirror what an RTO is required to maintain for its trainer workforce. If your school's RTO partner is audited by ASQA, these records may be reviewed.
Common compliance gaps
The most common issues Blueprint Career Development sees in school VETiS contexts are:
- Teachers delivering and assessing VETiS programs without any TAE credential
- Teachers holding TAE40116 who have not yet upgraded to TAE40122
- Qualification records that are incomplete or out of date
- Teachers who hold a TAE credential but lack vocational qualifications or current industry experience in the subjects they are delivering
What to do if you identify a gap
Act early. A documented plan to address a gap — with a named teacher, a qualification pathway and a realistic timeline — is significantly better than an undocumented gap with no plan in place. Contact your RTO partner as soon as you identify an issue.
