What Qualifications Do Teachers Need to Deliver VET in Schools in Queensland?
Teaching registration covers your role in the school system — but VETiS delivery sits under a separate national framework.
For Queensland teachers involved in delivering VET in Schools (VETiS) programs, the qualification landscape is more complex than it might first appear. Teaching registration covers your role within the school system, but VETiS delivery is nationally regulated under a separate framework — and that framework has its own qualification requirements.
Why teaching registration is not enough for VETiS
VETiS programs are nationally recognised qualifications delivered under the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015. Whether a school delivers directly as an RTO or through an RTO partnership, anyone conducting training delivery and formal competency assessment under that framework must hold the required trainer and assessor qualification — regardless of their teaching credentials.
The relevant qualification is TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. This is the nationally recognised baseline credential for trainers and assessors in the Australian VET sector.
What about the TAESS00024 skill set?
The VET Delivered to School Students Teacher Enhancement Skill Set (TAESS00024) is a shorter credential specifically designed for teachers who are new to VET delivery. It provides grounding in the VET system, training package interpretation and school-based assessment practice. In some contexts, it may be accepted as a bridge qualification for teachers in a delivery support role — but it does not substitute for TAE40122 for teachers who are conducting formal competency assessments.
What determines which qualification applies?
The key factor is the nature of the teacher's role in VETiS delivery:
- Teachers who are formally assessing student competency against nationally recognised standards need TAE40122
- Teachers who are delivering or supporting delivery without conducting formal competency assessments may be able to start with the TAESS00024 skill set
- The school's RTO partner sets the requirements for teachers involved in delivery under its registration
